Lucy Taylor (Hocking)

A household name in the show world, Lucy has been educating and riding ponies since the age of 10, producing them to success at Royal, National and Grand National level.

Lucy continues to campaign a team of ponies (owned by herself and clients), as well as break and school young horses, and offers her keen eye and expertise as a Judge in the Show Horse ring.

Above all, Lucy is professional, kind and always willing to give her time to share her knowledge and provide guidance to those around her. We are thrilled to have such a talented and gracious rider on Team BARE.

"I honestly love the BARE products. I have used a wide range of BARE clothing and horse accessories for many many years now and they stand the test of time and heavy usage. I often work 5 ponies (including breakers) a day, plus manage an agistment property and I have two young country boys who are rough on whatever clothing I’m wearing. It is a real joy to be able to promote a brand that you not only use, but genuinely believe in and endorse!"

Quick Questions with Lucy

I COULDN'T LIVE WITHOUT THIS BARE PRODUCT...

Performance Riding Tights!

I use BARE riding tights everyday! They are light and comfortable, a great fit, they have a full seat of grip (which helps when riding young ponies) and they come with a phone pocket! They are also versatile enough to be used as casual activewear.

MY MOST MEMORABLE MOMENT IS...

Winning NSW SHC HOTY with our large hunter pony Bamborough Jabiluka. We bought ‘Jimmy’ as an unbroken 3yo colt and broke, trained, produced and campaigned him to many wins at the highest levels. He was a very quirky and tricky pony, but one who was also extremely talented. It is very rewarding when you are able to work with a pony’s quirks and take it from an unbroken baby to wins at the top level.

MY FAVOURITE EXERCISE OR TRAINING TO PRACTICE IS...

I love halt halts. I train a million of these at home to build strength, balance and create more impulsion.

Although we are predominantly show-focused, my background was always dressage and all the ponies we train have solid dressage foundations. The half halt is a fundamental tool.

BEST COMPETITION DAY ADVICE...

Have fun! That’s why we get up early, spend long hours preparing, give up our weekends (and often our social lives) and devote all our energy to this sport. Because we love our horses and we love competing. Be present and enjoy the experience!

THE LAST THING I THINK ABOUT BEFORE ENTERING THE ARENA IS…

I usually ask myself and check if my horse is listening to me and with me. Am I 100% prepared and ready to enter the arena or do we need to do a few more exercises/checks before starting? You only get one shot at a workout/class so it’s important to make sure you are on point and in-sync with your horse.

RIGHT NOW I’M LOOKING FORWARD TO…

Canberra Royal, Sydney Royal and Grand Nationals.

WHICH ARE YOUR FAVOURITE BARE PRODUCTS AND WHY?

1. BARE Compression Socks – I love the light compression these socks provide. They NEVER ride down when used with short boots! They are thick enough to keep your feet warm on those cold mornings, but also thin enough to be used throughout summer. They are also easy to clean hair off!

2. Royal Riding Club Balmoral/Highgrove Baselayer – these long-sleeve lightweight riding tops are perfect for early mornings/between seasons where you need an extra layer but you don’t need a jumper. They are lightweight, comfortable, a great fit and they breathe! They are also versatile and can be used as activewear. I wear these tops every day (even in Summer).

3. Charlotte Waterproof Jacket – This jacket is both warm and waterproof. I’m a cold person and living through Canberra winters means lots of -5 degree mornings. This jacket is extremely warm, without being too bulky, and is also practical and stylish. It has a flattering cut, lots of pockets and it is short enough to use when riding. The best part is it is machine washable!
